There are numerous items that are considered as dietary supplements or nutrition  supplements, either minerals, chemicals or plants which have medicinal properties attributed to. These are usually OTC attainable with no prescription, hence with no real medical supervision.

A dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that contains a "dietary ingredient" intended to supplement the diet.
