Hedonism - does it mean evil?

Hedonism is a theory that states that the purpose and the cause of all human action is the desire for pleasure.


When talking about hedonism it immediately brings up the association of resort clubs in Jamaica by the same name, known by their sexual permissiveness and free sex which attracts certain holidaymakers.


It all started some thousands of years back during ancient Greece and Roman empire times and involved Emperors pleasures of life. Grandiose feasts, bath-houses,horse races and other pleasures were their pure pleasures.


If so, most of us are basically hedonists trying to avoid suffering and enjoy our lives. Some of us are less aware of our own hedonism because it is more like a kind of means. It is anything involves with materialistic pleasures. Hedonism of food which has  nothing to do with hunger, just the love for food.  Purely gluttony.


Our own lifestyle and leisure and the way we exploit our free time dictate our joy of life. Yachting, cruising, horse riding, playing golf or just taking some time off and lying on the beach may give us the satisfaction and provide us with our personal needs for pleasures of each of us.


We can quite often hear someone saying that we are living in a hedonistic era with a censorious patronizing tone. Is it that bad? Don't we all like the pleasure of life looking at the neighbor's green grass and want to have the same (or more), be the same or do the same. Maybe we can't afford a Lamborghini or a Mercedes but none of us would refuse to win such a car in the lottery, right?


Let's improve our lifestyles by using the variety of achievable good matters that most people tend to miss. Things that you have not known or haven't been exposed to that will add some value to our life and give us more pleasure and may even make them as means that we cannot live without them. Take your time, make a pause for a moment and look around. What can make your life more pleasure? (and yes, sex can also be taken into account).
